Loft Insulation
Loft Insulation can
be carried out with very little disruption. Without adequate loft
insulation you could be losing as much as much as 15% of your heating
costs through your roof. Insulating your loft is a simple and effective
way to reduce your heating bills.
Practically every
householder uses the attic space for storage and it may seem a very daunting
task to have to go up there and clear out this area in preparation for
the insulation to be installed. Most of your unwanted and unused
items can be left at your local amenity centre for recycling or donated
to charity shops.
When all storage
has been cleared out of the attic you will possibly find that the water
pipes, cold water and the expansion tank need to be lagged. It is
advisable to lag tanks and pipes when the attic is being insulated to
avoid the pipes freezing in winter. The recommended depth for loft
insulation at present is 270mm. 100mm of insulation is laid between
the rafters and 170mm cross laid. Walkway boards are fitted from
the hatch door over to the cold water storage tanks for easy and safe
excess to the tanks.
After the attic
has been insulated, the hatch-door is insulated and draught proofed (Provided
this does not obstruct the closing mechanism of the hatch door).
Although most householders use their attic for storage, it is not recommended
to continue this practice after the insulation has been installed due
to lack of heat in this area.
